About Us
The Chinese American Etiquette Association was established in August 2005 as a non-profit organization in San Francisco. Its mission is to explore the differences in manners and customs between Chinese and American cultures in today’s technological enviroment. We are concerned with how cultural adaptation occurs. For example, how do today’s personal and participatory media (i.e. email, blog, SMS, Podcasts) impact us in identifying and adopting the protocol and etiquette necessary to thrive in either world?
The old saying: “When in Rome, do as the Romans” is not sufficient for bridging the communication gap and cultural differences between China and the US. The world operates in the climate of globalization with a constant need for cross-cultural communication. CAEA explores how interractions occur during a process of cultural adaptation between these two countries and cultures.
I think one needs to understand the culture in the country you are in but still stay true to your own values and beliefs. You do need to understand the things "not to do" so that you won't offend others but then stay true to your own beliefs.

We add value to our community by issuing unique, proprietary newsletters, organizing events and providing trainings on a broad range of topics, such as executive visits, cross border conferences, fine dining, wine tasting, dress codes, cocktail networking and public speaking, to name a few. We are also in the unique position to help expand the image of Chinese abroad and improve the civility at home.
Through its focus on personal and business protocol and etiquette, CAEA seeks to help the new generation of corporate settlers in the US and in China achieve eloquence and excellence, and excel both in personal and professional life in a cross culture setting.
